Not a Miata, but a timing chain nightmare.

GMC Canyon has two timing chains. One front and one rear requires removing oil pan, transmission, and if it was 4wd you would have to drop the front axle. Unrelated, but to pull the brakes you have to remove the wheel bearings. Consider how good you have it. A $3000.00 to $4000.00 job.

Clearly, engine designers are no longer designing engines that makes labor for the mechanics makes it impossible for the shade tree mechanic or the DIY car owner. I wonder if engines are being designed to be replaced as a whole unit rather than repaired as parts wear out. Engine oil (synthetics) and chemically enhanced gasoline allow engines to operate for 100,000 to 200,000 miles with only oil and filter changes at 10,000 miles. I bet that you could replace the entire engine (engine price and labor) for $40,000. What is the price for a 2019 GMC Canyon ($50,000 to $60,000)

I think this one had a diesel which adds to the cost.

And I thought my front wheel drive v-6 Toyota timing belt was tough!

*At work and couldn't watch the video* Most timing chains I've encountered didn't even have a replacement interval. I speculate that these timing chains were intended to last the life of the vehicle, so maintenance isn't typically a huge concern. I wonder what the average life of a car is these days, based on the cars I see on the road I feel like it's well sub-200k miles and probably 99% of the timing chains out there would hit that without any issue. Even those that do have issues are typically going to be well out of warranty so most manufacturers aren't going to care anyway.

It has 240,000 kilometers converts to 149000 miles. If you watch the video you will see this vehicle was not designed to be repaired.

Re: Not a Miata, but a timing chain nightmare.

Haven't done a canyon yet, but the gmc/chevy SUVs that use the 3.6 by engine. Have a common issue with the chains stretching. I've done a few of those, I drop everything out the bottom, it makes like a whole lot easier. That one has 3 chains, and 2 different "positions" required to time it correctly.
