I can’t even imagine all the math, engineering and human bravery it took to land on the moon, walk around and then return to Earth, all done with less computer processing power than my cell phone, a thousand times less.

There were so many engineering firsts in this endeavor but as Kennedy had called for, a nation divided in turmoil over the Vietnam war but united in the most fantastical human endeavor, did indeed put a man on the moon before the decade was out. The was America’s hallmark achievement on July 20, 1969, 50 years ago today.

    Re: The Eagle has landed

It was an interesting time full of wonder and amazement. I don't think the general public was aware of how dangerous it was. I was watching with friends and they were going crazy excited saying Oh my god we landed on the Moon isn't fantastic. I was enjoying the event, happy that they made it safely to the Moon, landed, got out of the capsule, explored and got back in launched off the Moon connected to the main ship and came home. I knew we had the capability, the know how and the engineering & manufacturing skills to do it. When Lovell and his crew had the explosion on the way to the Moon and they had to cram into the capsule and with the help of everyone at NASA turned the ship around and returned to Earth that was what amazed me, I worried that they wouldn't make it back to Earth, but they did and against all odds they survived. That was the USA's greatest accomplishment to go to the Moon and to be able to save the Astronauts lives when a catastrophic explosion could have ended in great loss, NASA had the knowledge, skills and the means to save the Astronauts and bring them home.

Hard to believe that was 50 years ago, what an amazing accomplishment.

It's pretty disappointing that they haven't been back or really pushed for more exploration. We should have people on Mars by now. Yeah, you can argue it's "wasted tax dollars" but personally I'm sure glad the Europeans of ~500 years ago weren't all, "It's just a waste of time and money, there's nothing out in the water we could actually live on..."

    Re: The Eagle has landed

I just realized The Right Stuff, which I saw in the theater is 36 years ago! It’s actually only ten years after our last lunar walk.

I hear you about Mars. If it weren’t for the human condition, we should at the point of interstellar travel by now.

Small steps though. If it weren’t for King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella of Spain funding Columbus with a chunk of treasure, our borders would look much different today.

Maybe not in my life time, but soon the USA and other countries will build a station to gather more scientific information.
