Question Turo - Would you rent out your car?

First the Millennials shook up the taxi business with Uber and Lyft which is kinda cool. The New York taxi “medallion” racket is quickly collapsing due to competition because it shouldn’t cost a hundred bucks a mile.

Now there’s Turo which advertises itself as a car sharing service that has Hertz and Enterprise a little worried. Using Turo, you can offer your personal car up for rent, whether its a sports car or SUV.

I’m just curious, would anyone here consider renting out your car to a stranger for a day or two?

Hahaha.... ummm... no. I don't even let my wife drive my cars.

No, she can't drive a manual and has no interest in learning, so the Miata is totally out of the question. But the new Dodge kinda scares her. I have tried to get her to take it out for a drive but she isn't interested in that car either. So "win-win" for me!

I would think that your insurance policy would have to be "adjusted" if you wanted to hire it out like that anyway. Probably much higher costs too. So, still not interested.

Absolutely not! My nephew used to work for Enterprise and told me about some of the things that were found in cars including drugs, weapons and even body parts. I saw them advertise showing people rent their high end Mercedes and other luxury cars. Can't see letting a stranger use your car. Maybe a jalopy, but not a good car. No way.

My cars are for my personal use, no way would I rent out my car, to do so would raise my car insurance, and no amount of money could justify the cost to me to report any and all the damages caused by careless drivers.

    Just looking around Turo.com:

The car that pays for itself
Make a dent in your monthly car payments — on average, Turo hosts can cover their payments by sharing their cars just nine days per month.
You’re covered with up to $1 million in liability insurance, and your car is contractually protected against theft and physical damage. Or bring your own commercial rental insurance and take a bigger piece of the pie.*

Purchasing a used car to use as a rental for the purpose of making money would be the way to go, however, you would have to factor the cost of maintenance to figure out how many rental it would take to have a return on investment.

I wonder how liability would work say, if I did the brakes myself but the client gets into an accident.
