    Belt Tension Gauge

Read this is the one to use for the Miata ribbed belt. What do you think?

Always afraid of over tensioning the belt.

    Re: Belt Tension Gauge

I wonder why it says it won't fit my car. I'm always wondering how tight to make them. I usually get them too loose and they speak, then I crank them a little more.

I’ve always done it by feel, just like my spark plugs.

I have one of these. Easy to use, although clearance is a little tight due to my engine bay configuration. Biggest issue I had was finding the correct tension for a Miata's belts. There is a lot of misleading information so I just used what I felt was best and then checked to see if it was too tight. I never had problems tensioning V-belts but multi-rib belts are a completely different animal.

    Re: Belt Tension Gauge

On rare occasions during start up I get that alternator belt squeal. Belt is tight and don't want to over tighten belt and ruin alternator pulley bearing. My research showed the alternator belt tension should be 122 lbs. using this tool. If you are comfortable with tool I will get one.

I always used the rule of thumb, tighten belts so there is no slack and then press your thumb on the center if the taunt belt moving it about a 1/4 of an inch and the belt returns to the taunt position sometimes it only needs to flex 1/8 of inch.
