Ford dropping all but two cars, focusing on trucks and SUVs.

The death of the sedan: Ford announces it will drop all but two of its passenger car models – the Mustang and Focus from North American dealers – as it doubles down on SUVs and pickups

-Ford announced yesterday it's getting rid of Fiesta, Taurus, Fusion and old Focus
-The only passenger cars they are keeping are the Mustang and Ford Focus Active
-US and Candian dealers will still stock SUVs and pick ups in cost-cutting move

Ford has announced it is dropping all but two of its passenger cars in a move to cut costs and meet the demands of consumers that increasingly opt for larger vehicles. The firm announced yesterday the Mustang and the Focus Active will soon be the only regular cars available at US and Canadian dealerships. It will still produce SUVs and pickups as they continue to be popular with customers, but the Fiesta, Taurus, Fusion and regular Focus models will disappear from US showrooms.
The decision was announced by CEO Jim Hackett as the business released its first quarter profit results.

It will enable the company to cut $25.5billion in costs by 2022, up from $14 billion in cuts it announced last fall.
Mr Hackett told investors the company is undergoing 'a profound refocus' of its operations and is planning to get rid of unprofitable business. 'We'll restructure as necessary, and we'll be decisive. We're going to feed the healthy part of our business,' and dispose of marginal operations.' Ford said it expects pre-tax profit margins of eight per cent globally and 10 per cent in North America by 2020, ahead of a previous target of 2022. The company's stock was up 2.6 percent at $11.40 in after-hours trading

Responding to a shift in consumer demand to SUVs and pickup trucks, Ford said it planned to trim its North American car portfolio to just two models: the sporty Mustang, which debuted 50 years ago this month, and a new compact crossover called Focus Active starting in 2019. Ford 'will not invest in next generations of traditional Ford sedans for North America,' including the midsize Fusion and full-size Taurus, the company said. The car manufacturer has been under pressure from Wall Street investors to improve its product lineup and lift flagging profit margins.

Read that this morning. Ironic that gas prices are going up and they might have to rethink this.

I'm with Bernie, I feel this is a poor business decision

I was actually interested in their little Fiesta. I can’t imagine that once Saudi Crown Prince, Mohammad Bin Salman becomes king, he’s not going to fulfil his wishes to make OPEC strong again and put us on track for $5+ per gallon.

I feel like they were just on the verge of making relevant cars too. As long as I can remember their econocars have been really boring and underwhelming. It seems like they were getting close to being competitive with Honda/Toyota, especially with ecoboost and the ST line.

Re: Ford dropping all but two cars, focusing on trucks and SUVs.

It is no surprise to me that North America (USA,Canada) have opted to buy small economic cars from Asia, Europe and big gas consuming V8's. The US automobile industry made a decision to make economic small cars without any of the standards such as design style, performance, creature comfort for the drivers and passengers of their small, compact, fuel efficient cars, in smaller numbers as to not impact their large car market. Ford continues to make Fiestas, and other similar economical cars for the w
orld market, but that will not last for much longer, as they continue to loose market place to the Asia and European Automobile industry.

Prior to WWII the US had 5 major Automobile Companies: Ford, General Motors, Chrysler, Packard, Hudson, Studebaker, Nash, and other small companies. They Three Major Companies exported their brands to all corners of the world. Today, GM only has three Brands when they use to have Five. Ford had three today only two, Chrysler is owned by Fiat.
