Ford, GM or Chrysler Pony Cars

Things kind of dead here so I thought I would spark a discussion. For you younger guys Pony cars started with the Mustang in 1964 hence the name. Then GM countered with the Camaro and Firebird, and Chrysler (Plymouth/Dodge) came out first with the Barracuda and then the Challenger. Actually the original Barracuda predated the Mustang, but was just a dressed up Valiant that no one took seriously. Ford's Mercury Division stepped in with the Cougar in 1967 (my personal favorite) to round out Ford's line up and AMC (American Motors) jumped in with the Javelin/AMX I believe in 1968. As time rolled out a whole racing division developed with just those Pony Car models.

Looking back at all those original models and comparing them with their current new counter parts, the new models look over inflated, bloated, and over weight compared to the light and lean lines of the originals. In my opinion, I would prefer the originals to what is on the market now. When I bought my truck they had two Roush Mustangs in the showroom and was surprised to see how much longer, wider and taller they were than the originals. What say Yee?

I like the Mustang and Camaro, both old and latest. I don't think the latest Mustang has anything to do with the old but it's still very nice looking and I wouldn't mind having one.

I think they are a handsome design also, but so bulky compared to the old. The difference to me is that the old cars look like they are made out of steel where the new ones look like they are made out of plastic.

I'm with you, I hate how everything has moved toward huge and overweight. Unfortunately it seems like we're in the minority as far as valuing small, light, and nimble in our vehicles.

The Challenger weighs well over 4,000 lbs. No wonder you need 500 - 600 HP to get some performance out of it.

You can thank legislation and crash standards for most of the bloat......

thats why I prefer my older stuff with newer drivetrains...... the aftermarket is really off and running with the concept and it is great!

From watching several different car shows, you can update brakes and suspensions for just about any classic car out of Detroit. That's what I would do if I ever get my 1962 Corvette. Brembo brakes, lowered fully independent rear suspension, upgraded tubular front control arms, premium coilover shocks and sway bars, and an LS3 crate engine.

That is completely possible but do you know how paranoid you'd be leaving that expensive classic in a parking lot or driving it slightly the wrong way and wrecking it?

I'd like to have a Pinto with a supercharged 302 hidden by a quiet exhaust.
