You drive your Miata in the winter? Arrgh That's OK in Florida, but Nebraska?
I normally keep the Miata under a cover in the back of the garage during the winter, but put the winter tires on just in case my wife needs to use my Escape, if her car needs to go in for any reason. I just bought a set of tires for the Escape this morning. They explained that the all wheel drive system is sensitive to the different circumference a new set on the front and the older, worn set on the rear would have. So, $583.52 for a set of four BFG Advantage all season tires. Ouch! The Michelins would have been about a hundred more. So if I can find a battery for the Miata for ~$125 bucks, I'm in.

I put on a clinic in the rain at Atlanta Motorsports Park today. ;) I was giving a guest a ride, he enjoyed it.

Nice video. I love wet autocross, but a wet track day would terrify me.

Was that a 350Z toward the end?

I would have liked the ride but I also would have been white knuckled. Do you just hope you don’t slide off or are you positive the tires will hold?

It was a 350, IIRC, with trick paddle shifters.

I know the tires will hold, but Iím feeling what the car is doing. Weight transfer and yaw angle though the seat and steering. Itís just balance and discipline after that. The Cayman S behind me was getting smaller each lap.

Besides stiffening the damper compression, the car is as I drive it everyday; tires, pressures, etc. My passenger thought this ride was a riot. :)

There was another session later where the skies really opened up and it was flagged to end early. The way the tires were pumping water past the windows, it looked like I was cutting a wake. I can tell you the tires started to hydroplane in standing water above 70mph. ;)

Rainy track days are better than people realize because you get to apply driving principles at lower speeds and limits. People tend to be more alert and cautious than in the dry too. Value-wise, it's a great proposition. I maybe should have been in Red Group, but I had a few drivers wanting to follow me to see my line and what I was doing, so I was fine with it.

That’s a good point. Actually, it reminds me of all the ice driving I did up north. I got to understand my car’s dynamics and driving very well. Sometimes, just driving slowly to work was all about ice drifting my car this way and that, especially turning on hills. Big empty parking lots were great ice skating rinks for cars.

Yes, I lived in an area that received lake-effect snowfalls. We used to race on frozen lakes, too. Both as a time trial and wheel to wheel. Good fun.

Signed off on Rob Bolling in his ND at the same event. He was my student at the Miata event back in August. I rode with him in Session 1, here Iím following him as a final check. He brought his son, who is riding with him in this.

    He did fine!
